Welcome to ETC and UPP at the Urban Teaching Residency!

UTR is a unique after-work program supporting the development of working educators in Philadelphia, the surrounding areas, and across the country. Our program offers two tracks-- one with Pennsylvania certification (Every Teacher Certified, or ETC) and one without (Urban Professionals Program, or UPP).  The former requires a series of courses related to pedagogy and development; the latter is a hybrid online program that allows educators to broadly explore education in high-needs contexts.  Both tracks were designed to be completed while working full-time.

Every Teacher Certified (ETC) track. As an ETC resident, you can earn Pennsylvania certification(s) over one year or a master's degree during an additional year while remaining in your school.

ETC residents are teachers, support staff, or classroom aides in PreK-12 public, charter, or other high-needs schools. The ETC curriculum prepares them to work effectively in high-needs settings. Our evening coursework is tailored to the schedule of full-time educators; the cohort structure allows early-career teachers to network and learn alongside colleagues.

Urban Professionals Program (UPP). UPP is a master's degree in Urban Education designed for teachers, researchers, educators, and community advocates who are interested in the distinct needs of children and families in high-needs contexts. To meet the needs of people working full time, UPP is an executive-style format program with a hybrid of online and in-person coursework. This non-certification program supports Graduate students in their commitment to urban communities while allowing them to complete a master’s degree  in Urban Education in two years.

This program explores issues related to equity, access, institutional and school-level policy, as well as the needs of children living in poverty. Drawing from critical and sociocultural perspectives, UPP  considers how communities, schools, and policy intersect to impact families in high-needs schools.
